A Bio of Me

Who am I anyway? Am I my resume?
I grew up in & around Boston, and now live farther down the seaboard. I've moved quite a bit (Minneapolis, Tucson, NYC), but despite the way I end up in cities, I'm just as much a country mouse, and have spent significant, life-sustaining time away from the concrete (Maine, West Virginia). I've known a lot of people from a lot of walks of life, and I'm a better writer (& person) for it. I find that I’m most at home in environments where “intersectionality” is more the rule than homogeneity. I gravitate towards the “creatively maladjusted.”
For a while, I taught undergrads: mostly film theory & screen aesthetics, then short documentary production. One summer I tried to teach screenwriting to detained youth in Riker's Prison, but I'm pretty sure I learned more than they did - so do I count that as “teaching”? I've also taught public speaking and Adult Basic Ed/GED prep, and tutored people in ESL/EFL. I hope my teaching days are not only behind me.
I've been a vegetarian since my senior year in college. I became serious about Quakerism at around the same time. Over the years, I've come to see my choice not to kill other beings for my own culinary pleasure as an essential expression of the Quaker “peace testimony” and key to the maintenance of my integrity. You will find no dead animals to eat at my "craft services."
I wrote my first complete short story in elementary school and absolutely loved the feeling it gave me. Playing "imaginary" games was always my favorite thing, and writing fiction is very much a continuation of that in some ways. I like creating things from scratch, generally: soups & stews, furniture, house designs, characters.
The movies that inspired me to make movies early on were: Stranger than Paradise, sex, lies & videotape, Hollywood Shuffle, Meshes of the Afternoon, The Unbelievable Truth, Killer of Sheep, and my sentimental favorite for all time (saw it in the theater 16 times), My Brilliant Career. More recently, I've been inspired byThe Banshees of Inishirin, Bird, and Sentimental Value. You can see more movies I love HERE.
I'm a lover of irony, a resister of domination, and a sucker for a furry face.

Eventually this will link to a page about Time Away, my feature screenplay in pre-pre-production.
It's about a former child prodigy, now 30, who returns to the home of her estranged family only to find that her childhood hallucinations begin again, and that the family patriarch is leaving their Maine estate to the Penobscot instead of the family.
"What haunts you?"
